Fiverr Hiring Process
We use Fiverr on a consistent basis to handle specific tasks that we know are either too time consuming for our team, or require specific skills or knowledge that our team lacks. Most frequently this comes in the form of content development that is better handled by a skilled graphic designer, or video editor so I’ll focus on hiring this kind of freelancer for now. Fortunately, Fiverr has no lack of incredibly skilled, low-cost freelancers who can handle our needs.
Know What You Want
The first and most important rule when it comes to getting the most out of your Fiverr gigs, and hiring a freelancer is to know exactly what you want. The better you can communicate what you are looking for, the more likely you will be to hire the right freelancer, and to receive a final product that satisfies your requirements.
Do your best to provide specific examples of similar content that you would like your freelancer to replicate. Describe what you like & don’t like about the examples you’ve provided, and give clear detailed instructions for how they can meet your expectations. The more detailed you are, the easier the entire process will be.
In most cases we are providing content to these freelancers and asking them to turn that content into a new final product. You should have a clear sense of what is possible for the freelancer to achieve with the content you are providing. Don’t expect them to work miracles. If all you have is still images, obviously you can’t expect them to provide you with a final product that includes video footage that you never provided them.
When it comes to developing event video content please see the chapter “Invest In Content” in our book “The ‘Ticket Sales’ System: 11 Steps To Grow Your Events Fast” for examples and descriptions about what makes a great event promotional video.
Who To Hire
Choosing the right freelancer on Fiverr is another essential component to achieving your goals. This can be done a couple of ways. The first way is to search for existing gigs that match your criteria. I try to look for gigs that include examples of actual finished products that look very similar in style to what I want the freelancer to create. If I can see that they’ve already done something very similar, I can be confident that they have the ability to do what I need as well. I also try to look for freelancers that have as many reviews as possible with a rating of 4.5 stars or above. This tells me that they are doing this kind of work regularly, and have a track record of satisfied clients.
Sometimes there are no obvious gigs that stand out as being a perfect fit for your needs. In these instances I will often create “Post A Request” to Fiverr’s job board. By doing this, many Fiverr freelancers will have a chance to bid on your gig, and respond with a message telling you why they think they are right for the gig you have offered.
You will need to include an estimated budget in your Request. If your budget is set appropriately high, you will likely receive 50+ offers on your gig in the space of about 12-24 hours. As you preview the offers, pay attention to how much they’ve bid of course, but also how specifically they responded to your request. Did they reiterate your requirements? Did they provide examples of similar work they’ve done in the past? Did they explain what relevant skills they have that match your needs? You will receive many obvious copy & paste messages in these offers and it’s often difficult to tell who really has the skills you need or not. Therefore I tend to favor anyone who responds with a detailed message reiterating my requirements, and/or who provides examples of work they’ve done which is similar.
It can be frustrating to hire someone who is difficult to communicate with, or that you find out after the fact doesn’t have the exact skill set that you actually need. It is worth your time to spend a little extra effort, and to be a little more picky about who you hire to ensure that you get the final product you are looking for.
Setting Your Budget
When developing an event promo video it’s important to have an idea how much the kind of work that you need a freelancer to do, would cost if you were to do it yourself, or if you were to hire someone local to do the same work. Depending on the level of complexity these prices can range considerably.
I tend to try not to spend more than 20% – 25% of what a local video editor would charge me for the same work. Here is a breakdown of approximate prices for each of the types of videos we most commonly need edited.
Full Production Video: If you’ve spent the money to have a local production company shoot a full video production for your event, you might as well have them edit the video together as well. They are likely going to have a better understanding of what you need, as well a better vision because they’ve been involved throughout the entire process.
Live Event Footage Montage: For a footage montage a local editor will likely charge you in the range of $200 – $400 depending on your requirements. On Fiverr however this same job may cost anywhere between $25 – $100 with the right freelancer.
Dynamic Image Slideshow Video: A slideshow video made up of still images that have been animated into motion and includes dynamic titles is actually more complex than editing live event footage. A local editor may charge anywhere between $250 – $600 to put a video like this together. On Fiverr we try not to pay more than $50 – $150 depending on the level of complexity.
